Why the tithi changes at odd hours
A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun. Because the Moon's speed varies between about 11.8° and 15.2° a day, a tithi lasts anywhere from roughly 19 to 27 hours. That is why a tithi can begin at any moment, why one day can hold two tithis, and why a tithi is sometimes skipped (kshaya) or repeated (vriddhi) between sunrises.
The wheel shows the sidereal positions at sunrise in New Delhi: Mesha for the Sun and Vrishchika for the Moon.
